An Update & A Sneak Peek

October 7, 2013
Where did the late spring and summer escape? Trees are, again, woven in a mix of yellow and chilly Nordic breeze. I’ve been so absorbed in book-writing that a full season of blossom and green skipped me and I’ve only seen the daily tour of sun through my window for the past four months!

Last week I finished photographing for the book. What a task! It was so intense that I’m not able to analyse it yet. One thing became clear though: my creativity is a myth! I started with a fresh mental monsoon of ideas but soon became drained, as if cracked, and helplessly dependent on the potency of prayer.

A well-known sentiment by an early 20th century sport journalist Grantland Rice “not that you won or lost, but how you played the Game” became the precept of my sportsmanship. I imagine marathon runners adapt such ethos when their glycogen levels drop and they “hit the wall”. Then, the seemingly endless road becomes the duty. It’s both, the path and destination.

I have cooked all of the 108 recipes twice or trice, and will still cook some of them at least once. More I cook, more I’m torrid about food related ingredients, relationships, techniques and experiences. I’ve become a person who observes and notes down facts, patterns and transformations while awake and asleep, and contemplates them. In yoga, such stages of internalization are known as sravana, manana and nididhyasana. Writing a cookbook has actualized my interest in cooking.

From now until the end of the year I’ll focus on the non-recipe content of the book and, also, process the images. During this time I’ll resume the blogging responsibility, too.

Some of you have privately expressed that the readers are losing their patience because the blog is in a dormant state. I’m sorry about it. The good news is that I have created a file of almost 200 recipes that didn’t make it to the book and will gradually unzip it here. However, today there is no recipe. I hope this post will bring us all up-to-date. Welcome back!

  36. Dear Lakshmi,
Don't worry about speedy, needy ("hungry") people - everything has its time, and you have been immersed in honing, mastering your skill. The audience (here at least) has all the patience and understanding of the seasonal nature of ones' progress and quests in Life.
I'm cheering you on, together with many of your blogreaders - take your time, dive as deep as you need, and when you emerge again we will applaud in wild excitement!
    Enjoy the journey.

I admire the fact, in this too-hurried, multi-tasking world, that you have been taking the time you need to focus on something important to you. It is important to do that, and important for others to witness people doing that. Those who are impatient for blog posts are complimenting you because they miss your posts; but perhaps need to slow down themselves and remember that everything happens in its own time. Part of the beauty of your blog is in how you demonstrate, through your writing, recipes, and photos, that every single moment matters. Your book, I am sure, will reflect this as well, and will be beautiful.

    1. Dear Terry,
Thank you for your in-depth comment. My observation is that older we get, less we're able to multitask. Time spins too fast. It’s tough enough to remain in the present moment and do one’s duty as well as possible.
      Greetings, Lakshmi

  46. Welcome back, dear! I've missed you. I definitely relate to being too busy to blog, but unfortunately I haven't been doing amazing food photography while on hiatus. Instead I've been totally overwhelmed by graduate school and it being much more time and life-consuming than I'd expected. In fact, with every day, I become convinced that any progress I made in photography ability was a dream or a fluke. Your photography is clearly as gorgeous as ever and I can't wait to see more of it now that you're returning to blogging.

    1. Xiaolu, we have to prioritize and graduate school is rightfully on the top of your list now. You’re still young and have all the time in the world ahead of you! The skill of photographing will remain latent until you pick up the camera again and start shooting. What you’ve learnt in the past will come back and expand. No worries! You are doing a much more important thing now.
